A word from Cave de France: Famous and emblematic of the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation on the left bank, often considered one of the best growths in this small area of the Médoc, Château Chasse Spleen offers a deep ruby color, an expressive nose combining black fruits (blackcurrant, cherry) and delicate spices, and a structured palate with fine tannins, freshness and a persistent length. A beautiful alliance of power and classic elegance, "velvet" on the palate, confirmed by this lovely 2019 vintage!
This wine is capable of aging well while often remaining accessible when young thanks to a balance between fruit and structure.
The estate that produces it is a historic family property located on the Grand Poujeaux hillside, planted on Garonne gravel and very favorable limestone soils. Managed for several decades by the same family, today under the direction of Céline Villars-Foubet, it has built its reputation around the consistent quality of its wines, combining Bordeaux tradition, environmentally friendly viticulture and a very recognizable expression of its terroir.
The name Château Chasse-Spleen most likely comes from a literary reference in the 19th century. According to tradition, during a visit to the Médoc, the poet Lord Byron allegedly declared that the wine from this property was so remarkable that it "chased away the spleen," meaning melancholy. The term spleen, popularized in France by Charles Baudelaire in Les Fleurs du mal, precisely refers to this dark and nostalgic state of mind.
The estate, formerly known as Grand Poujeaux-Castaing, is said to have officially adopted the name "Chasse-Spleen" around the mid-19th century, taking advantage of this poetic and romantic image. Even if the anecdote linked to Byron is not formally proven, it contributes to the legend and charm of this Médoc cru.
